Katrina Stories Project Mission
The Katrina Stories Project has three objectives:
- Promote individual recovery by offering survivors
the opportunity to tell their stories.
- Promote society recovery by offering the
opportunity to listen.
- Establish an audio repository of survivor stories --
preserving a human-scaled oral history of storm, aftermath and migration
still in progress.
We do this in four
phases:
- Sit with those affected
by the hurricane and its aftermath, one at a time, and listen deeply to
their stories -- recording when acceptable to the storyteller. Where
possible Listeners will have some training in Compassionate Listening
techniques. Often, events will be scheduled to bring community
members together with listeners.
- If possible, arrange
training for interested community members in Compassionate Listening
techniques.
- Sponsor community story
circles, so that the community can bear witness in person.
- Return the collected
stories back to the community by several paths of dissemination, including
but not limited to: web download, podcasting, media presentation,
repositories in schools and libraries, touring school and community
presentations, permanent presentation.
