Katrina Stories Project Mission

The Katrina Stories Project has three objectives:

  • Promote individual recovery by offering survivors the opportunity to tell their stories.
  • Promote society recovery by offering the opportunity to listen.
  • Establish an audio repository of survivor stories -- preserving a human-scaled oral history of storm, aftermath and migration still in progress.

We do this in four phases:

  1. Sit with those affected by the hurricane and its aftermath, one at a time, and listen deeply to their stories -- recording when acceptable to the storyteller.  Where possible Listeners will have some training in Compassionate Listening techniques.  Often, events will be scheduled to bring community members together with listeners.
  2. If possible, arrange training for interested community members in Compassionate Listening techniques.
  3. Sponsor community story circles, so that the community can bear witness in person.
  4. Return the collected stories back to the community by several paths of dissemination, including but not limited to: web download, podcasting, media presentation, repositories in schools and libraries, touring school and community presentations, permanent presentation.
